Why Livescan? - The Background of Livescan Fingerprinting
As a result of legislation passed in late 1997, the California Department of Justice ("DOJ") has developed an automated background check process that requires digitized fingerprints, called Live Scan. Live Scan is an inkless fingerprinting process. The fingerprints are electronically transmitted to the central computers at the DOJ in a matter of seconds, instead of the days required to send hard copy fingerprint cards through the mail.
While this technology has been in use in California, many states have adopted their networks to accommodate electronic submissions for Non-Criminal applications, or what many states refer to as Applicant Processing.
The Live Scan technology replaces the process of recording an individual's fingerprint patterns through a rolling process using ink. Rolled ink fingerprints would become smudged through handling and mailing, causing prints to become illegible. This slowed the process of criminal background clearances to a period of WEEKS and MONTHS. The Live Scan process gets results to the employer or licensing agency within days. Additionally, the state agency will coordinate other processing, including forwarding the fingerprints to the FBI.
Who Needs LiveScan?
This requirement varies from State to State. - An industry that requires this service in California, may not need it in Nevada.
Rest assured, if you have been instructed to submit fingerprint cards for a criminal background check, you may submit your fingerprints via livescan. This will speed the background process considerably. For example, the typical process time for card submissions is 6-8 weeks, but electronic submission gets results in 7 days.
LiveScan Las Vegas has become the first and ONLY livescan facility in Nevada to submit fingerprints electronically to the FBI. This means results come back in LESS THAN 7 DAYS!
